Carole Stratford Subramanian

Carole Stratford Subramanian, 90, died on August 28, 2026, in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband of nearly 57 years, Ron Subramanian, by her side.

Born Ellen Carole Stratford in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, Carole was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Forest City High School in 1953 and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Connecticut in 1960. She went on to a long career in scientific research, beginning as a research assistant at Oxford University in England and then spending five years at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York.

It was while working at Columbia that she met Ron. They married in Santa Monica, California, on October 17, 1969, Carole’s birthday. They were inseparable throughout their life together.

After moving to California, Carole joined the Laboratory of Biomedical and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she worked as a staff research associate for nearly 20 years. She co-authored 26 scientific papers and abstracts on lipid biochemistry and brain metabolism.

Carole and Ron lived for many years in Los Angeles and Palmdale, California, before retiring to Las Vegas. They loved to travel, with favorite destinations including Lake Tahoe, Hawaii, England, and India, and Carole enjoyed telling stories about both her travels and her years in research. Family was deeply important to her, and she treasured time spent with loved ones. Elegant, determined, and warm, she also had a lifelong affection for cats.

Carole brought intelligence, grace, and curiosity to a life that took her from a small town in Pennsylvania to laboratories in England, New York, and California, and through nearly six decades beside Ron.

She was predeceased by her parents, William J. Stratford, Sr. and Mary Ellen Carey Stratford, and her siblings William J., Edward, Anna, Rita, Paul Russell, and Maryclaire. She is survived by her husband, Ron, and by generations of nieces and nephews who were an important part of her life.
