Victoria Liu Tai was born in Hubei, China on May 10, 1938. As a toddler she survived the upheaval of World War II and the Chinese Civil War between the Nationalists and Communists. At 11 years old she made the harrowing journey to Taiwan with her family.

In Taipei she grew up with her three brothers and three sisters. She often told stories of her Tomboy days, rough housing with her brothers and swimming in local ponds and eating fresh picked tree fruit. She was a good student and enjoyed her time in school.

After graduating from high school, Victoria attended Tai Zhong University and focused her studies on agricultural economics. There she met the first love of her life Robert Teng. They married in 1962 and had their first son, Jerry, the following year.

Victoria and Robert were briefly separated when Robert earned a chance to leave Taiwan and study in the USA at Penn State University. At that time the Taiwan government did not permit married couples to travel to the U.S. together. Showing her strength and dedication, Victoria moved to Thailand for a year in order to gain entry to the USA and reunite with Robert. Following completion of his master’s degree in chemistry, the couple moved to Hood River, Oregon. It was there that Victoria gave birth to their second son, Bing.

In 1968 Victoria and the family moved to Seattle, WA. There she taught herself to program computers using key punch cards and showed a high aptitude in this area. IBM helped to formally train her to be a programmer. Various companies looking for her expertise recruited her. She steadily advanced in her career with companies such as Seattle City Light and eventually became the top systems analyst for the largest department store in Seattle, The Bon Marche (known as Macy’s today)which had a longer, richer history than Nordstrom’s.

Robert passed away suddenly in 1989. At the age of 51 Victoria was widowed. News of her situation traveled quickly through a network of high school and college friends. That’s when Tenley (Danny) Tai, a close high school friend of Robert’s and the master of ceremonies at their wedding re-entered Victoria’s life. Danny pursued Victoria aggressively and his efforts were eventually rewarded as Victoria’s second love. They were married in 1996 and made a comfortable life in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Tenley and Victoria retired to the sunny dry climate of Las Vegas, Nevada in 2006. There they enjoyed their retirement years to the fullest. They reunited with a group of old friends and enjoyed weekly buffets, slot machines, mah-jong and gourmet meals. Traveling extensively was also a passion for them. They have been on 26 cruises and have visited many destinations all over the world.

Victoria’s health started deteriorating in December of last year. She was in and out of the hospital for over two months before passing on the Lunar New Year at the age of 87. She is survived by her husband Tenley; two sons: Jerry (wife Vivian), Bing (wife Kathy) and two grandchildren: Robert and Kylie.
